Latest News on Polar Bear Protections

This page is to list the latest news, quotes, and images regarding the polar bear protections supposedly put in place by the Department of the Interior. As you can tell, there's a wide range of thought about whether these protections will be effective, or if it's just whitewashing the government's plan to open up Alaska for more oil drilling.

It seems unlikely that polar bears will be able to adapt to the current warming trend in the Arctic.

Passively assisting coral reef migration may be acceptable, but transplanting polar bears to Antarctica, where they would likely drive native penguins to extinction, would not be acceptable

Polar bears are doing just fine. There are more Polar Bears now than at any time since we started keeping track

  Wired

We are not recommending placing rhino herds in Arizona or polar bears in Antarctica

In Venture Arctic, the player controls the forces of earth, sun, wind, and water to bring summer and winter to polar bears, orcas, and more.

I love the Arctic so much. I worry about it. It is the last beautiful, pristine place on Earth. We need to protect it, not because of polar bears but because our very survival depends on it. Not for our grandchildren; it's happening so quickly we need to protect it to save ourselves.

To the idiot that thinks polar bear extinction is about the bears: The concern is the impact on humans and food if the seas warming keeps accelerating. Sea ice reflects solar energy. Without sea ice, we're doomed. Do some research! I want my daughter to have a healthy planet to live on!

This climate change stuff isn't just about polar bears in the Arctic. It's about things happening right here in our own country.

  Grist

Dude, I know you like polar bears.

If polar bears and Pacific walrus are to survive in the face of global warming, we simply cannot allow oil development in the Chukchi Sea.

Polar bears aren't the only animals who suffer from global warming

Companies get OK to annoy polar bears in pursuit of oil

There are an estimated 41,000 species of vertebrates on Earth, yet until recently, only a small handful were available for purchase–tigers, bears, lions, penguins, giraffes, and perhaps an owl or a duck ... Even then, only the most common species within a particular genus was represented. In the case of bears, for example, you'd have the brown bear, but rarely the polar bear and never the sun bear or sloth bear.

ASRC shareholders are the indigenous people of Alaska's North Slope and share the same environment with the polar bears

Republicans voted No on the energy bill, which obviously means they bite babies, hate families, and want to kill polar bears.

Experiencing anything firsthand really is what makes the place real, whether it's polar bears in the Arctic or Yellowstone's geysers or the oceans

We've all seen pictures like these. Polar bears in danger because global warming is literally melting their habitat. But they are far from the only animal affected by climate change.

There are over 100 billion tons of untapped, domestic wildlife lying beneath, on, and above the surface of Alaska's North Slope region ... We have an obligation not only to our society, but to future generations, to begin drilling these polar bears, grizzlies, harbor porpoises, Roosevelt elks, sea otters, muskrats, and snowshoe hares immediately.

I used to work with the dolphins at the Coney Island Aquarium ... but when I got here and saw the polar bears, I was immediately converted.

Earlier today, I had heard that Vice President Cheney had giant ice bergs flown in from the Arctic Circle to add to the flood waters. Even though there is no proof, the charge demands full investigation. I will not allow ice bergs to be flown without carbon offsets and great care for polar bears and seals.

There are some entries picturing exotic animals in the photography portion ... We have several large, framed photographs of African elephants, rhinos, black bear cubs, polar bears and even a mountain goat.

About 2,000 of the 25,000 polar bears in the Arctic live in and around the Chukchi Sea, where the government in February auctioned off oil leases to ConocoPhillips Co., Shell Oil Co. and five other companies for $2.5 billion.

Midwestern levees are bursting. Polar bears are adrift. Gas prices are skyrocketing. Home values are abysmal. Air fares, college tuition and health care border on unaffordable. Wars without end rage in Iraq, Afghanistan and against terrorism.

If climatic trends continue polar bears may become extirpated from most of their range within 100 years.

Until we take steps to address global warming, we need to do all we can to relieve further threats that are accelerating the bears' downward spiral, including the trophy hunting of polar bears in Canada

  KFMB

Just like polar bears in the Arctic, the environment is on very thin ice

Why is it we care about polar bears in the least effective way and the most costly way, rather than dealing with the issue where we would do a lot of good?
