site updates

Sorry about the downtime

Sorry about the downtime. Some asshole decided to constantly download every file on this site over and over and over again a little over a week ago, and they ended up using several gigs worth of my available bandwidth. I caught it before it got too bad, but as the end of the month came up I was dangerously close to going over my limit. Seeing as how I get hosting for this site for free, I don't want to abuse my bandwidth limits, which are honestly extremely generous. Because of that, I decided the best thing to do would simply be to put the site in maintenance mode rather than have everything disappear with an ugly error message.

On another note, things should be back to normal now that we're in a new month, and I've added a new auto-generated news page: LGBT News.

This isn't just an environmental blog, but a blog about the problems preventing us from creating a truly global community. That means everything from protecting endangered species to politics to climate change and human rights issues, of which LGBT issues are a part and will continue to be covered here.

Last bit for the night

I'm pretty much done with rebuilding the framework for the site. It took a little longer than I expected, but I also took more time to do backups before adding bits and pieces. I think for now I'm going to leave out some of the social networking stuff I had installed earlier, simply because much of it didn't really work the way I wanted it to. I'll probably end up customizing a lot of that and writing the code myself.

On the other hand, I'm actually much happier with things the way they are now. Carbon Accounts is something I couldn't seem to get working the last time around, and now that they're up and running I'm thrilled. The newsroom section is also a plus in that it seems to be working the way it should.

One thing I do miss from the old blog page is the related content items I was able to pull in from the web. It was fairly easy to write the code for that and make it work with Wordpress, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to do it on this platform. I probably can, but I'm nervous about messing things up.

On the actual content part, I've got a few pretty exciting stories I'm going to be touching on tomorrow. Everything from organic diaper rash cream (I've been babysitting my niece a lot the last few weeks) to the power of poop. Trust me, it's a lot more exciting than it sounds.
